5 Fun and Clever Family Hiking Tips

You might be surprised to learn that I didn’t get much exposure to Mother Nature as a child. I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors, but I didn’t have many opportunities to experience it until later in life. We definitely weren’t the family hiking...

Floating the Snake River in Spectacular Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton was one of my favorite national parks long before I actually visited. There’s just something so mesmerizing about those distinctly rugged, craggy peaks. So as soon as I started planning a Bozeman > Big Sky > Yellowstone National Park > Jackson Hole...

Did you know today is National Plan for Vacation D Did you know today is National Plan for Vacation Day?? As if I needed another excuse to plan my next getaway πŸ€ͺ

What type of travel planner are you? Do you schedule all the things ahead of time, or do you sort of wing it when you arrive?

I'm somewhere right in the middle. I schedule the activities/places we most want to see, typically one "big" thing each day, then go with the flow as for everything else. I also block in downtime - I've learned it's extremely important for not getting burnt out! And of course, I work for a couple hours, usually rising way before the sun so I can enjoy the day. That's one of the biggest benefits of being a freelancer! πŸ™Œ

This pic isn't mine, but it's St. Croix, my next stop. 15 days and counting 😳 so y'all know I'm in full-blown planning mode! Can't wait to share my itinerary soon!
When we travel, #hiking is our priority. Even when When we travel, #hiking is our priority. Even when we're in major cities (side note - San Fran has some epic urban hikes!)! It's all about chasing those views.

A [very] close second is food. I'm convinced I could go absolutely anywhere and have a fabulous time, so long as I can hike and have a great meal.

How about y'all - do you prioritize beaches, major landmarks, specific activities, nightlife...?
They say everything is bigger in Texas, but that c They say everything is bigger in Texas, but that clearly doesn't include arches. This particular one is in Buckskin Gulch near where it meets Wirepass Trail on the AZ/UT border.

Peep the two women on the bottom left for scale 😳🀯
A year or so ago I heard something in passing that A year or so ago I heard something in passing that's stuck with me ever since. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was along the lines of, "What will you do today that you, or people close to you, will remember for the rest of your life?"

That's powerful to me. We live in a world where, even now during the pandemic, our days are over-scheduled and we're rushing to the next thing. It's all a blur and it's very, very easy to overlook things and take them for granted.

And so, I try my hardest to keep this in mind: what will I do today that I'll remember forever, or that someone else might? It doesn't havr to be big. In fact, it doesn't *have* to be anything. This last several days was a LOT of those "remember forever" things, those moments. I'm still feeling the effects of it all (literally πŸ˜…) and am incredibly grateful. Grateful for my own experiences and that others got to check things off their own bucket lists, and for the people involved in making it happen.

How about you - I'd love to hear about some things you'll remember forever, big or small!
I hope y'all aren't over seeing pics from our trip I hope y'all aren't over seeing pics from our trip to #thewave and southern Utah, 'cause I'm nowhere near finished posting them πŸ˜…

This is one of many magical archways on the Queen's Garden Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park 🀩 That light dusting of snow made it even more beautiful!
Let's talk about the infamous Angel's Landing trai Let's talk about the infamous Angel's Landing trail in #zionnationalpark

I'm still a little bit in disbelief that we did it πŸ˜…πŸ˜³ Have you done it or do you know someone who has?! In case you're unfamiliar with #angelslanding here are some interesting (terrifying lol) facts:

β€’ In just 2.5 miles, hikers climb over 1,500 feet in elevation (believe me, my quads feel every single foot of this today)
β€’ There is no part of this hike that's easy. You start on a series of switchbacks, and there's another one called Walter's Wiggles with a whopping 21 switchbacks immediately before you actually climb Angel's Landing
β€’ Several parts of "the spine" (the thin top of the ridge in the first pic) are less than a few feet wide 😳 Narrower than a sidewalk!
β€’ Chains are bolted directly into the cliff in several spots to help hikers where the drop is the steepest
β€’ Angel's Landing is consistently listed as one of the most difficult hikes in the world
β€’ Approximately 10 people have died from falling while hiking this trail - BUT on peak weekends, a couple thousand people per day do it successfully. So if it's on your bucket list, go for it!!
Have you ever had a day when you conquered somethi Have you ever had a day when you conquered something major and felt like, well, a complete badass? πŸ’ͺπŸ‘Š

That's me, right now. Angel's Landing in Zion, complete βœ”

More details on this insane hike (and entire trip!) soon, but now, we eat πŸ˜…
You've surely heard of #antelopecanyon but did you You've surely heard of #antelopecanyon but did you know there are spectacular (largely unknown) slot canyons allllllll over the Southwest?? 🀯 Particularly in southern Utah, along the UT/AZ border. This is a tiny one, maybe a half-mile long, in the middle of nowhere. Makes me want to explore more and more and more...! Is being a "slot canyon enthusiast" a thing? I'm quickly becoming one πŸ€ͺ
